IntrepidTours
staff
pioneered the development of activity based tours in Brunei
from the mid 90's. We designed tour programmes, established
activities and created written materials for a number
of Brunei based travel concerns, including Royal Brunei
Airlines (ie: Golden Touch Holidays) and Ulu Temburong National Park. It
is common to see
IntrepidTours'
written materials, photos and tour concepts copied.
We
have a network of over 35 guides, drivers and support staff
throughout North-west Borneo - Brunei, Sabah and Sarawak.
Highlighted below are some of our people you are likely to
communicate with, or meet.
Allan
Riches - our Managing Director - is at the heart of
our developments, the design of tours and written materials
for other organisations, and the operations of
IntrepidTours.
An Australian
with an extensive background in adventure activities, educational
tours,
programme design, staff training, and operational safety.
Plus over twenty years experience operating and directing Outward
Bound centres.
Allan
was invited to Brunei in 1993 to set up the Outward Bound
centre to help develop the enterprising spirit of the
growing youth population. He was then asked to establish a business to help develop activity and
environmental oriented tour experiences for Brunei's
fledgling inbound tour industry.
Allan
applies his qualifications as an educator - with in-depth
experience in experiential learning - to the tours and travel
programmes created and operated by
IntrepidTours.
Developing holiday and travel experiences that are an
engaging immersion in the contrasting culture, environment
and lifestyles of NW Borneo integrates his adventure
education background with the wonderful people and places of
Brunei, Sabah and Sarawak.
The
safety and well-being of our guests is facilitated by
Allan's extensive experience, including:
Ski
patrol advanced first aid
Ships' Officers Medical course
Wilderness Medical Technician
Yachtmaster instructor & Master Class V
25
years managing participant safety in remote areas
His
success has been recognised with awards including:
Churchill Fellowship - to examine programmes, staff
training, safety and operations of activity based
wilderness education organisations in the UK, Europe and
North America.
National Medal for Service - in regard to volunteer
rural and wilderness fire fighting in the Australian Capital
Territory.
Allan
Riches Outward Bound Scholarship - established by the
board of Outward Bound Australia five years after leaving
the organisation.
This
background underpins the attention to detail, creative programme
design, tour operations and selection of guides,
accommodation, tour venues, drivers, bus operators and other
travel components for your unique
IntrepidTours
programme in Borneo .
Our Managing Director established radio
communication services for remote visitor operations,
including this repeater site on a remote mountain in Brunei.
Our long distance
and local area radio systems provide a unique
standard of safety and tour
co-ordination service.
Our radio
communication services are also
used for special events, such as fishing contests
and yacht regattas.
Norazimah Bte Mohd Suhaily
(Joey):
Joey
works in our Bandar Seri Begawan office. She is the person
many of our clients meet first via email when inquiring
about tours in Brunei and nearby Sabah and Sarawak. Joey
knows the drivers, guides, boatmen and co-ordinators at our
visitor venues and is the person who keeps track of our
visitors to ensure multi-day tour programmes operate as
scheduled.
A
resident of the water village in Bandar Seri Begawan, Joey's
trip between home and work each day involves a water taxi
ride and a walk past the central Bandar Seri Begawan market to reach our office.
Many of
our guests meet Joey in person when they take a water
village tour in Bandar Seri Begawan. Her first haven
knowledge of life in Brunei's Venice of the East
gives visitors a personal and insightful view of modern life
in a traditional setting.
Dk
Rasidah Bte Pg Mohammad:
Rasidah
also works in our Bandar Seri Begawan office, lives in the
nearby water village and also enjoys all the sophistication
and facilities of modern Brunei life, while choosing to
raise her family in the traditional water-village style that
has been part of Brunei's heritage for hundreds of years.
Rasidah
looks after hotel and other accommodation inquiries and
bookings. If you need advice, prices and booking, Rusidah
has the details. A luxury room at Empire Hotel, some floor
space in a Temburong longhouse, a hammock beside the
Kinabattangan River, a home-stay in Tambunan, a Mulu
National Park cabin, our own Intrepid Units (on the 10th
floor of our building in central BSB) or our Guest-house in Temburong; Rusidah has the details.
Rashidah is
also involved in organising trips for local Brunei
schools and businesses. When they need an excursion for
students or some corporate team building, Rasidah is their
first contact.
Maruli Bin Tamin:
Many of
our guests first meet Maruli at Brunei airport, where he's
often waiting to take people to their chosen hotel. He's
likely to re-appear the next day to guide guests around the
attractions of Bandar Seri Begawan on their Cultural
Heritage tour, or take them for a boat ride on the Brunei
River to see Proboscis Monkeys and other wildlife.
Previously in the Royal Brunei Armed Forces as a driver and
logistics specialist, he helps make sure our vehicles are in
top condition and tour equipment is ready for action. And
because he grew up in Bandar Seri Begawan, he has a very
thorough knowledge about attractions and lifestyles to be
discovered on our Cultural Heritage, Mangrove Safari,
Selirong Island and Brunei River tours.
Martin Vogel:
Martin
Vogel is another Australian and an almost 20 year resident
of Sandakan, in eastern Sabah. Trained as an engineer,
Martin has turned his expertise into helping establish
local-community sustainable eco-tourism programmes, and as a
wildlife and habitat specialist.
Martin
co-ordinates our visitor operations in eastern Sabah. Guests
heading for Sandakan, Sepilok, the Kinabatangan River, and Tabin
Wildlife Reserve come under Martin's care to ensure the
planned programme operates as expected.
Martin
has a vast wealth of knowledge about the area, the wildlife,
the communities and the activities. He's hiked to the top of
Mt Kinabalu dozens of times while doing environmental
surveys and leading groups and explored many other remote
areas.
Chong Teah
Lim:
Our
guests visiting Mulu Caves, and particularly those who
choose to make the 2d/1n 4WD, longboat and hiking trip
between our Temburong Guest-house and Mulu Caves, will most
likely meet Lim as their guide.
Lim has
been taking visitors to these areas for over 15 years and
has a very thorough knowledge of the trails, wildlife and
environment.
