The island of Borneo holds a traditional mystique, and with it a sense of exploration and discovery. Brunei and the surrounding states in North West Borneo - Sabah and Sarawak - contain a land of dramatic contrasts, culturally, environmentally and politically.  

Intrepid's  Educational Adventures  combine the venues, attractions and activity options in Brunei, Sabah and Sarawak into formative educational experiences. North West Borneo is the mystical venue of longhouse cultures, rainforest, mountains and rivers. It is also in a process of change, where the  cultural, environmental, economic and political diversity present opportunities for valuable learning experiences.   

Brunei Darussalam is at the core of most of our educational tours and exemplifies the qualities that form the basis of a thought provoking educational experience:

Brunei is changing – rapidly.  In fifty years, Brunei is experiencing the types of change that took 300 years of European evolution.  The developments within one generation have brought with them great change, yet Brunei has preserved many of it's traditional practices.   

Brunei is the same – traditionally. The longest serving family monarchy in the world, in combination with established Malay traditions, and the guiding spirituality of Islam. Coupled with it's financial security these factors have combined to enable Brunei to develop in a totally unique direction; unlike any other nation in Asia. 

Brunei is green – and protected. This small but financially self sufficient nation has successfully weathered the storms of rapid modernisation. Its rainforests have been protected from logging and agricultural de-forestation. The border of Brunei is readily observed from the air - it's where the trees start.  These remarkable jungles are now a focus for international researchers and nature lovers. New species continue to be identified each year.

Brunei is a stimulating educational experience, full of diversity and contrasts which will challenge students’ ideas and expectations.  

Adventure based activities and a self sufficient operating style are regular programme elements. Our educational tour experiences are designed to  develop co-operative team work, present challenging and fun activities, and create a dynamic, rewarding experience while exploring and learning about the area. 

We regularly immerse students in the different cultures  by staying in accommodation such as home-stays and longhouses to give them first hand experience of the traditional lifestyles. 
 

Brunei is an excellent initial base, and normal start and finish point for our educational tours.  Direct flights from the UK, Australia and many regional centres help to minimise travel time.

Because Brunei sits between Sabah and Sarawak, most of our programmes also include journeys into these states. Different activities, lifestyles, governance and financial circumstances create contrasting experiences to present new intellectual and organisational challenges as the group travels along it's journey.

Our Educational Adventures range from 8 to 21 days.  Primary age students normally have shorter programmes with some self-sufficiency aspects and activities designed for their physical and mental capabilities.  Secondary level programmes have progressively increasing levels of physical, organisational and intellectual challenge.

And then there are the beaches, jungle walks, sports facilities, environmental study centre, white water rafting, islands, snorkeling, diving, sailing, horse riding, Oil and Gas Discovery Centre, and Jerudong Park Playground.

Intrepid's  team  can create a programme full of contrasting, fun  and intrinsically motivating  experiences in Brunei, Sabah and Sarawak - North West Borneo. By integrating two or three of these States, the differences in lifestyle, land management, wildlife preservation, cultural values and social conscience become clearer.  Encountering the differences is part of this stimulating educational experience.

Intrepid's  Educational Adventures team is lead by Allan Riches, a  qualified educator (B.Ed.,  M.Ed.Admin., MACE., AAIF) with 25 years experience designing and operating educational excursions using an experiential paradigm. Combining his extensive Outward Bound experience, with fifteen years living and working in  North West Borneo, guarantees an active, safe and educationally rewarding programme.
