SailMail
Simple
HF/SSB radio e-mail
for
Cruising & Racing
Brunei Bay Radio operates
the regional
SailMail Association e-mail gateway
providing a simple text e-mail service for recreational
small-craft (power and sail yachts) in SE Asia, the North
West Pacific and the Indian Ocean.
The
SailMail Association
is a
not-for-profit organisation that operates a world-wide
network of 17 relay stations to give cruising and racing
yachts a reliable and low cost HF/SSB radio based e-mail service
from most places around the world. The service is
particularly suited to circumnavigators.
SailMail provides a reliable, convenient, low cost service to transfer text messages
to family, friends and business contacts. The on-board
software also includes facilities to easily send
position reports (displayed on a website), and request weather charts
(GRIB files), weather forecasts (including official METAREA
forecasts and locally created forecasts) and other safety related
information. There is no additional charge for these
services.
The
SailMail service has been designed/programmed by yacht owners specifically
to perform well despite the limited power supplies, small
antennas etc that characterise many recreational small-craft.
The management of messages and tracking of messages is very
thorough, to ensure e-mails are not lost in the system.
Annual membership
is only US$250 for up to twelve minutes connection time per day
(averaged over 7 days). There
is no additional connection time fee. With a high speed Pactor 3 radio modem, twelve minutes is sufficient for most
recreational small-craft to get their weather information
and send/receive e-mails related to managing a cruise,
delivery trip or race passage.
SailMail does not
require an Amateur Radio license or special skills:
-
Small-craft
need an official marine radio call-sign allocated by their relevant national authority.
This is the basis of a SailMail e-mail address. For example
VHV1234@sailmail.com
is the SailMail e-mail address for a vessel with marine radio call-sign VHV1234.
-
The SailMail
service is largely managed by the software. Once the hardware is installed and the software set-up, operation is
similar to familiar shore-based e-mail systems.
-
The SailMail
software is free to members. Updated station information (eg: new stations or
revised frequencies)
arrive by self-installing e-mail messages. Updated SailMail
software can be retrieved on disks ashore, Wi-Fi sites, internet
cafe's etc.
-
PCA.CC
is a specialist marine HF
radio equipment supplier with extensive experience in SailMail installations.
Marc Robinson, provides complete working systems
including HF radio, modem, cables, software, and notebook computer.
Alternatively he can advise on how to set up an existing HF radio and notebook computer with
Pactor modem, cables and software.
